Suffering's Benefit

Suffering's Benefit
Pastor David Gibbs - 8/31/2014
2 Corinthians 1:1-11
Because suffering reveals weakness, let it lead us to God.
1. Lead us to serve others (v.3-7)
• when we are afflicted we should turn our attention outward rather than inward
• the suffering we go through prepares us to give help to others
• is that the mindset of the church? Is that our personal mindset toward our sufferings?
2. Lead us to trust God (v.8-10)
• afflictions teach us to trust in God rather than ourselves
• are we willing to trust God no matter what He allows to come into our life?
3. Leads us to value prayer (v.11)
• we become a person/church of passionate prayer once we've come through an affliction
• all are allowed to come before God in prayer

We are Reconcilers

We are Reconcilers
Pastor David Gibbs - 8.24.2014
2 Corinthians 5:14-21
Who needs Jesus?
Reconciliation = the process of restoring a relationship
If we are reconciled to Christ, let us be reconciled to one another.
1. Reconciled by sacrificial love (v.14-15)
• Those who died with Christ have the opportunity to live the life of Christ like we do
2. Reconciled by honest judgement (v.16-17)
• We need to see everyone through a different lens of judgement now that we have Christ
3. Reconciled by supreme example (v.18-21)
• We need to imitate Christ's example in our way of interacting with people

Holy Distinction

Holy Distinction
Pastor David Gibbs - 8/17/2014
Proverbs 15:1-16:8
There are distinct indicators in the lives of those following Jesus

1. Gentleness -15:1 and 15:18
- how often has our pride hurt someone or hurt us?
2. Strong Character - 15:2-4, 24-27
- Same when people are around as alone
- Same on the outside as inside
- Honesty and Integrity
3. Obedient - 15:5, 20-22
- Learn to submit to those in authority
4. Productive - 15:6, 19
- They are actually doing something for the work of Christ
- Pray for and encourage those who are not productive
5. Wise - 15:7, 28
- Godly wisdom does not just come with age
- It comes with a faithful walk with God even through the trials
6. Authentic - 15:8-9, 29
- Are you being real?
- Is the image people see the real you? Your successes and failures?
- There is healing that comes with opening up to someone
7. Reverent - 15:10-11, 33
- Someone who is growing in God grows in the reverence towards Him
- They want Him to be glorified in all we do
8. Joyeous - 15:12-15, 30-32
- When we are satisfied with the creation God made in us, the joy inside shows on the outside
- People are drawn to people full of joy
9. Christlike - 15:16-17, 8
- Great possessions of a Christlike life...
• a pious life
• a loving home
• personal integrity
The church is what brings healing to the community
He is distinguishing us from the world so we can set an example for them of who Christ is

Rules of Freedom, Part 2

Rules of Freedom Pt.2
Pastor David Gibbs - August 3, 2014
Exodus 20
Because Christ has set us free, let us live to honor God
1. Set free to love God (v.1-11; 18-21)
• He has made it possible to not have any other god stand in our way from worshiping and following Him
2. Set free to love others (12-17)
• We've been set free to destroy the barriers that are up separating our relationships
- Murder is more than just physical murder - Words Kill (Matt. 5:21-22)
- Even the looking and desire to sin with someone in our mind is adultery (Matt. 5:27-28)
- We have the freedom to love those who we claim are our enemies (Matt. 5:43-48)
Are you free to love your neighbor or do you remain a prisoner to anger?
What evidence in our life demonstrates that our love differs from that of the world?
**We should never teach someone that solely following the Ten Commandments will get you to Heaven
**Sin has no limits and the Devil will never say "Your going too far with this." He'll take you as deep in sin as you'll let him.
